They find the support they need to integrate into the community. Hundreds of refugees from Ukraine and vulnerable individuals from the northern region of the Republic of Moldova are being assisted by the DEMOS Public Association in the process of social inclusion, thanks to the project “Integrated humanitarian response for Ukrainians affected by conflict and third-country nationals from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, and Moldova,” implemented in partnership with Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH), with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA).
Closer to them in order to provide with needed legal assistance
The activities carried out within the project are complex and encompass several aspects. One of the most important forms of support provided by DEMOS is obtaining temporary protection for refugees fleeing from the war. As a result, access to public services is facilitated, and the rights and resources necessary for better social integration are ensured. Nearly 300 refugees from Ukraine have already benefited from these services.
Comprehensive and personalised support for social integration
Creating conditions to facilitate the integration of refugees and vulnerable locals into the community’s realities involves a series of other activities covering both adults and children. These include Romanian language courses, support in the process of integration into the educational system, recreational activities for children, as well as support provided by association specialists to children to improve their academic performance. Adults are also encouraged to secure financial independence by finding employment.
Psychological assistance
The tragic events that led them to seek refuge in the Republic of Moldova and their interaction with a new environment have profound psycho-emotional consequences. According to DEMOS psychologist Viorica Orac, they often experience feelings of anxiety and depression. To combat these feelings and facilitate their inclusion process, the project has organised psychological assistance sessions for beneficiaries from 5 districts in the north of the country: Briceni, Ocnița, Dondușeni, Râșcani, and Edineț.
Social cohesion activities
Beneficiaries from the same districts have enjoyed a series of social cohesion activities. Hundreds of children have become even closer to the culture and community in which they are growing up, thanks to excursions, visits to museums and theaters, as well as other activities organised by the association. These initiatives have contributed to improving the quality of life and integrating beneficiaries into Moldovan society.
